Introduction to Summary Writing
Original Lesson Description / Plan
- Provides the students with basic steps on Summary Writing
1) Teacher takes students through steps on Summary Writing (Powerpoint)
2) Teacher shows students samples of texts and summarised versions of text as models.
3) Students are given a text and asked to attempt a summary following guidelines given on the powerpoint.
New lesson incorporating ICT
4 periods (30 mins)
Teacher provides overview of steps to write a summary
Student reads the given passage which is posted in Wikispaces
Student reads summary question and understands its demands
Teacher checks for understanding verbally
Student views video on identifying main points, supporting points and examples, to focus on one skill
In pairs, students read the passage again and discuss which are the main points, supporting points and examples
Each pair highlights the main points, supporting points and examples in different colours
Students watch video on the use of bubbl.us
Students make use of bubbl.us to create a spider map showing main points, supporting points and examples
Students export spider map and embed it in their Wikis.
Teacher selects both good and weak samples from the various spider maps, compiles them into one diagram and uses it for class critique
Students revisit their spider maps and improve on them before re-exporting them into their Wikis
Teacher reviews the spider maps and gives final comments
